This spring, as part of our Values curriculum and Art Program, we invited TEDx speakers Garret Garrels and Tim Holmes to lead a workshop at IMSP for our Elementary classes.

TEDx speakers Garret Garrels and Tim Holmes travel the world with their Random Gifts of Art project, exploring community, communication and human connection through the sharing of art work. This spring, IMSP invited them to present their workshop to our Elementary classes. Under Garret's and Tim's guidance, our students created and gave away their art on a busy day in Prague. There are a few things typical to Montessori classrooms worldwide that might give the casual observer a pause. The students moving through the room know to step between mats, never on them. Understanding your child's inner sense of order

Have you ever noticed that your child enjoys singing the same song over and over again, or wants you to repeat the same story for what feels like a million times? Dr. Montessori highlighted the importance of sensitive periods in children, which are known as windows of opportunities for children to develop skills, including movement, language and most definitely, order. A child’s need for external order is present as early as childbirth and peaks in their second year, before fading at about the age of 5. This period of development helps a child to develop a connection between themselves and the world, process information and overcome challenges.

Starting Preschool: How to Handle Saying Goodbyes?

Before the age of two, the child undergoes a series of developmental changes making them ready for a new social environment. Although the parents are still the most important people in their world, children now need an expansion of their social horizons: the experience of a peer group, of being socially independent. This is a big and valuable step: learning to function without the parents in a community of friends and teachers.
